20/20 Barbara Walters. Breast Augmentation. What You Should Know Before Getting A Boob Job!

Breast ImplantsWith more than 300,000 women having surgery to make their breasts larger, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure, according to ABC’s 20/20 with Barbara Walters special report The Cutting Edge: Younger Than Ever. This special explores the changing trends in today’s cosmetic industry and this segment looks at the newest innovations in the breast augmentation. But before deciding to transform into a Hollywood “High and Hot”,  we learn of some cautionary considerations that come with breast implantation.

Barbara talks with Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Stuart Linder M.D., who performs up to six operations daily, using the newest innovations and techniques in plastic surgery. He has patients from all over the world, places like London and Paris. He explains that the newest innovations are in the implants themselves. They have been reinvented. The newest breast implant is the style 45 gel which Dr. Linder refers to as Hollywood “high and hot.”  The older style 10 low profile he calls “fat and flat”.

For a typical first-time patient whose breast may have collapsed after childbirth,  she can expect to use a new imaging machine where she can see in a photograph of herself, what  size breasts would look right for her.
For the surgery, Dr. Linder uses a technique called the lollipop lift to avoid obvious scarring.
He explains the procedure…. “the lollipop breast lift is an incision around the nipple, down the middle of the breast and all the way underneath the crease. We are able to limit that scar under the fold.”

What are some of the down sides to having breast enlarements?
Dr. Linder says almost half of his patients are victims of botched surgeries.
The two main reasons women will have to have revision surgeries are…

  1. Rupture of the implant or deflation of a saline implant. Breast implants are not lifetime devices.
  2. Severe scar tissue or encapsulation of hardening around the implant.

He says every 10 years a woman is coming back to have something fixed.

We meet one of Dr. Linder’s patients, Clancy, who has a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of breast augmentation. She received her first implants at 24 years old when her once full breasts deflated after childbirth. Four years later her saline implants became rippled and deformed. She then had them replaced with larger silicone implants, size 32F, 5 pounds a piece!  Now 37 years old, she says she has suffered years of backache and discomfort. Anything pressing up, pressing in or lifting up or anything involving her chest or back hurts!
Dr. Linder says the biggest mistake that doctors can make is going too large. It causes thinning out of the tissue. You can visually see the bag. Clancy’s breasts are now sagging and hanging.

Dr. Linder will replace the 10 pounds of silicone with the latest implant technology. After removing the old silicone implants, he will make a nest out of a brand-new material made from pigskin to support the implant. Dr. Linder explains that it covers and integrates into the women’s tissue to make like a bedspread over the implant. It is smoother and hides the wrinkling of the bag.
The operation lasts just over an hour and will cost about $18,000.
Two weeks later Clancy returns to Dr. Linder’s office for a follow-up and is happy with her procedure.
Dr. Linder does point out that women who undergo surgery reduction are the most satisfied patients of any of the procedures that they do.
