20/20 Barbara Walters. Cosmetic Surgery. Men Trends. Grow Taller By 6 Inches!

Tall Men Get In the White House50% of Americans would like to have their appearance enhanced through cosmetic procedures and men are no exception! In a special 20/20 report, The Cutting Edge: Younger Than Ever,  Barbara Walters examines today’s $10 billion a year cosmetic procedure industry, it’s latest innovations, new cutting edge procedures and the hottest new trends. One growing trend is the rapidly growing numbers of men going for cosmetic procedures.  ABC’s Bill Ritter reports that the most popular male procedures are just like the women: liposuction, nose jobs, eyelid surgery, breast reductions, and hair transplants done by robots.  Botox treatments, “Bro-Tox” have increased among men about 100% since 1997.  Bill reports why men today will invest thousands of dollars to improve no only their looks but increase their height by as much as 6 inches or more!

At a consultation, Bill is told by the doctor that he would make a good candidate for an eyelid lift. It would involve tightening up the lower lid a little bit by removing a little extra skin.
He would also be a candidate for a procedure to tighten his “turkey neck.” An incision would be made around his ears and pulling it up. Bill decides against any procedure but if he did the eyelid surgery it would cost about $7,580. The neck lift would be around $12,000. That’s $19,580 and insurance would not cover any of it.
It is expensive but many men think of it as an investment. Projecting confidence might win you that girl, or that job promotion or give you a winning advantage in a political race. Like it or not looks are important whether it’s on the job or in politics.

And in politics not only does looks make a difference, height does too! Bill reports that in more than half of all US presidential elections, the taller candidate went to the White House. Height discrimination is subconscious and every one does it to some degree or another.

And today’s technology makes is possible for a man to increase on his height!

Bill examines a growing but controversial new trend in cosmetic surgery. Men want and get their legs lengthened!
Dror Paley, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at the Paley Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Florida, did 650 leg lengthening surgeries last year.
He explains “if you break a bone and pulled it apart very slowly like a millimeter a day, the bone knows how to grow new bone and the tissues, the muscles, the skin and nerves and the arteries all know how to regenerate.”  He uses a state-of-the-art telescopic implantable rod.  Once inserted in the middle of a broken bone it expands and allows a new bone to grow around it. The time period can be three months or more to complete.  But the physical therapy is demanding and excruciating.

Most of Dr. Paley’s patients have severe deformity.  But today he has an increasing amount of cosmetic patients.

Dr. Paley says ” the majority of patients that come for cosmetic limb lengthening, have what they call height dysphoria, people who are unhappy with their height… You can have mild cases of this and you can have people who commit suicide… Psychological therapy doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference.  It’s one of the few psychological psychiatric disorders that you can actually cure with a knife.”

A leg lengthening procedure with an orthopedic surgeon such as Dr. Paley in the US might cost you about $85,000.  But you can pay less than half of that with a foreign doctor. That is what one man did who spoke to Bill about his leg lengthening procedure. He traveled overseas for the surgery as many Americans do. He actually went twice. The first time to add 3 inches to his 5’6″. Then back to add an additional 5 inches. So, he went from 5’6″ to 6’2″!

The difference in the price may be in the internal rod itself.  The foreign procedures use an internal rod that allows the patient to control the lengthening themselves, actually twisting their own legs to extend the rod inside.  Our guy speaking with Bill actually demonstrated how he did it.  With one leg bent over the opposite knee, he did a small twisting of the foot forward with a click and then backward with a click to reset. That back and forth motion he considered “one.”   He said he has to do that nine times a day to achieve a .70mm. But he says it is all worth it.  At 6’2″, his dating life has improved exponentially!
