1-29-2013 Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network’s  Our America With Lisa Ling aired an episode called ‘Generation XXL’ which focused on the childhood obesity epidemic in America. She reported that for the first time in history, our children may have shorter life spans than their parents. She reminds us of the sobering statistics that it is estimated that over 12 million children in America are considered obese, a number that has tripled in the past 30 years.  One in six of America’s kids are considered to be obese.  So how did we get here?

She tries to find the answer by traveling deep into the heart of Southern America, the hardest hit region of America’s childhood obesity epidemic.  We meet a 100 pound 4 year old, a 347 pound 12 year old, and a community that found working together was the solution for their obesity problems. Spinach Recalls. Salmonella, E-Coli, Listeria. What Can We Do?

11-7-2012  The news wires have reported yet another recall from that innocent, healthy salad green full of vitamins, minerals and cancer preventing antioxidants.  This time Fresh Express Incorporated is recalling their 9 oz packages of Spinach with a Use-by Date of November 7 and Product Code of S299B25 (upper left corner of package) due to a possible health risk from Salmonella There has been no reports of illness or consumer complaints as of this date, however random sample testing under regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, showed a positive result for Salmonella in an isolated instance. As a precaution, Fresh Express customer service representatives have contacted relevant retailers to verify the recalled product is removed from inventories and store shelves.   Read More…

Do TV Childhood Obesity Ads Help Kids Lose Weight? TV Experts Say Yes And No!

Georgia Anti-Obesity Campaign10-09-2012 On a recent Dr. Oz Show, one topic of discussion was the state of Georgia’s anti-obesity campaign where the controversial ads came under fire.  The state of Georgia defended the ads saying,  ”More straight talk and less sugar coating” is needed to help the obesity crisis.  While some in Georgia feel ”We need to fight obesity, not obese individuals.” Should we shame kids about being over weight to get them to lose weight, The Power of Embarrassment?  Dr. Oz contacted Children’s Healthcare Of Atlanta, who sponsored the ads.  They said ”The ads were intended to raise awareness in Georgia of the medical crisis facing our children and families – and we achieved our goal.  But, with 75% of parents of overweight/obese kids still in denial about the medical risks possibly facing their child, our work has not ended.”

ABC World News. Childhood Obesity. Georgia Fights Back. But Have They Gone Too Far?

1-2-2012  ABC World News with Diane Sawyer reports on an anti-obesity campaign launched by the state of Georgia aimed at bringing attention to the childhood obesity crisis in that state.  But is seems that the blunt, in-your-face messages  directed at kids in TV ads and billboards are raising eyebrows and even outrage.  ABC’s Steve Osunsami examined the issue and reported that health experts behind the startling ads say that is exactly what the state of Georgia needs.  ”More straight talk and less sugar coating” the crisis.

Osunsami reports that nearly 40% of Georgia’s children today are obese or overweight.  Some even diagnosed with hypertension in the first and second grades.   Georgia feels that the parents of these overweight kids are not recognizing that this is a serious problem and hopes these TV ads and billboards rouse parents to action.  Read More…

ABC News: Fungal Meningitis Outbreak From Tainted Injections. Several Deaths!

Meningitis Outbreak10-05-2012 ABC News has been reporting on this health alert through Good Morning American and ABC World News programs.  The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) reports of an outbreak of fungal meningitis caused by contaminated steroid injections for back pain treatments.  So far, there has been reported 47 cases in seven states with five deaths! The source of contamination has been traced back to a pharmacy in Massachusetts,  The New England Compounding Center, which has since closed down its operations. But the CDC is still worried that the outbreak may spread because more than 17,000 vials of this medication was shipped to 75 clinics in 23 different states! Read More…

ABC World News: New Study Says Organic Food Has The Same Nutritional Value. Why Pay More?

She says that a new study shows that going organic may not be worth the sometimes 50% increased price tag. She said that Stanford researchers went through 200 previously published studies to find out if organic produce was more nutritious.  What they found was that organic vegetables scored equal on vitamin and mineral content as conventional produce.  But is organic food safer? Peanut Butter Recall. Salmonella Outbreak In 19 States

ABC News: TSA Security Caught Stealing From The Passengers They Are Paid To Protect!

Airport Security09-28-2012 That’s what ABC’s Brian Ross found out first hand when a TSA officer was caught stealing an iPad belonging to his investigative team.  When a new report came out saying 381 TSA officers have been fired for stealing from passengers and their luggage, Brian Ross and his investigative team went to find out. On ABC’s Good Morning America his report told how his team went to 10 major airports that had a history of TSA theft problems. They checked in luggage all containing cash and iPads valued at $600.
