ABC World News: NYC To Ban Super Sized Sugary Sodas

Sugary Drinks05-31-2012 ABC World News with Diane Sawyer reports that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has created a firestorm by proposing a ban on supersized sugary sodas including sweetened teas and energy drinks in an effort to curb obesity.   The sale of any sweetened drink larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, movie theaters and stadiums will be illegal!  Mayor Bloomberg said “now there are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity.  But the single biggest is soda.”

ABC’s  Sharyn Alfonsi reports that in one 16 ounce glass of soda there is 200 calories.  That’s about 27 cubes of sugar.  A super sized 51 ounce soda has about 600 or more calories or about 86 cubes of sugar!  Dr. Richard Besser,  ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor says cutting out 16 ounces of soda per day equals about 20 pounds lost a year.

Michael Cannon of CATO Institute,  says the ban itself makes no sense. A restaurant cannot serve you a 17 ounce soda,  but they can serve you a 17, 22 or even a 32 ounce milkshake that can have two or three times the calories.  “This is the most ridiculous sort of nanny statism.”

Should the government be getting involved in passing laws about such things as limited our soda intake?

With the media dubbing the mayor ‘Nanny Mike’ and ‘Soda Scrooge’ he told ABC’s Diane Sawyer that he doesn’t think they are derogatory terms.  In response to those saying that the government should be staying out of this Michael Bloomberg says what they are doing is educating. No one’s right’s are being violated. If you want to buy 32 ounces of soda in a restaurant they must give you two 16 ounce glasses.  It will force people to see the difference and forces them to recognize they are drinking an enormous amount of sugar.  What is likely to happen is they will drink one and not the other.

He told Sawyer that he felt as mayor he had to take some type of action because the state health agencies were not doing anything about the obesity problem.  He feels he has a responsibility to improve the public health.  He says “New York City residents on average live three years longer than the average in America and if giving 8.4 million people an extra three years to live isn’t the purpose of government than I don’t know what government is!”
