Calcium

Dr Oz has done numerous segments of the importance of calcium in our diets. It is necessary for developing and maintaining strong bones and preventing osteoporosis, frailty and broken bones.  Because your bones are constantly repairing and replenishing tissue, you constantly need to supply your body with adequate levels of calcium. If you don’t get enough calcium, your body takes it from your bones.   At age 30 you are already at risk of brittle bones and by age 50 it gets much worse. The average woman needs 1,000 mg to 1,300 mg of calcium daily.  For those that may not get enough in the foods they eat, Dr. Oz has recommended a “Calcium Cocktail.”

Food sources of calcium are dairy products, bones in fish like canned salmon and sardines, and vegetables like amaranth leaves, collards, kale, spinach and broccoli.

Calcium can even help you lose weight. In one segment Dr. Oz told of a study where subjects who ate 3 servings of dairy products totaling 1,200 mg of calcium per day lost significantly more fat than those that ate one serving per day of these foods totaling 500 mg.

It seems that calcium also works at helping stop the growth of cancer cells. Dr. Oz says calcium deficiency may put you at a higher risk for developing colon cancer.

To see if you are getting enough calcium from the foods that you eat you may want to use a free online nutrient calculator such as The RightTrak.com.
