1-29-2013 Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network’s Our America With Lisa Ling aired an episode called ‘Generation XXL’ which focused on the childhood obesity epidemic in America. She reported that for the first time in history, our children may have shorter life spans than their parents. She reminds us of the sobering statistics that it is estimated that over 12 million children in America are considered obese, a number that has tripled in the past 30 years. One in six of America’s kids are considered to be obese. So how did we get here?
She tries to find the answer by traveling deep into the heart of Southern America, the hardest hit region of America’s childhood obesity epidemic. We meet a 100 pound 4 year old, a 347 pound 12 year old, and a community that found working together was the solution for their obesity problems. Continue reading “Our America with Lisa Ling. 10-09-2012 On a recent Dr. Oz Show, one topic of discussion was the state of Georgia’s anti-obesity campaign where the controversial ads came under fire. The state of Georgia defended the ads saying, ”More straight talk and less sugar coating” is needed to help the obesity crisis. While some in Georgia feel ”We need to fight obesity, not obese individuals.” Should we shame kids about being over weight to get them to lose weight, The Power of Embarrassment? Dr. Oz contacted Children’s Healthcare Of Atlanta, who sponsored the ads. They said “The ads were intended to raise awareness in Georgia of the medical crisis facing our children and families – and we achieved our goal. 1-2-2012 ABC World News with Diane Sawyer reports on an anti-obesity campaign launched by the state of Georgia aimed at bringing attention to the childhood obesity crisis in that state. But is seems that the blunt, in-your-face messages directed at kids in TV ads and billboards are raising eyebrows and even outrage. ABC’s Steve Osunsami examined the issue and reported that health experts behind the startling ads say that is exactly what the state of Georgia needs. “More straight talk and less sugar coating” the crisis.
Osunsami reports that nearly 40% of Georgia’s children today are obese or overweight. Some even diagnosed with hypertension in the first and second grades. Georgia feels that the parents of these overweight kids are not recognizing that this is a serious problem and hopes these TV ads and billboards rouse parents to action. 10-4-2012 Dr. Oz weighs in on the new study making the headlines that imply that organic food may not be healthier than conventional food. Researchers at Stanford found that organic foods have the same nutritional value as conventional foods, so the media headlines question if organics may not be worth the money. Dr. Oz says there is a glaring catch to this information. The study seems to put more weight on the nutritional value of food and not as much concern for the toxic chemical pesticides that we consume in some of these conventional foods. He feels that the pesticides in food is a threat to our children’s health. Dr. Oz believes that eating organic foods is one of the best ways to avoid exposure to this health threat and therefore organic food is worth the investment!
