1-29-2013 Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network’s  Our America With Lisa Ling aired an episode called ‘Generation XXL’ which focused on the childhood obesity epidemic in America. She reported that for the first time in history, our children may have shorter life spans than their parents. She reminds us of the sobering statistics that it is estimated that over 12 million children in America are considered obese, a number that has tripled in the past 30 years.  One in six of America’s kids are considered to be obese.  So how did we get here?

She tries to find the answer by traveling deep into the heart of Southern America, the hardest hit region of America’s childhood obesity epidemic.  We meet a 100 pound 4 year old, a 347 pound 12 year old, and a community that found working together was the solution for their obesity problems. CNN: Almost 50% of Americans will be Obese in 2030! The Political Side.

Why Is America Fat?9-18-2012 CNN’s Newsroom reports on a new study that indicates that by 2030, every state in the nation will have at least a 44% obesity rate and that the adult obesity rate could go over 60% in 13 states.  Mississippi, having the highest obesity rate in 2011 of 35%,  is projected to have the worst increase, jumping to 67% in 2030.  Colorado with the lowest of 21% in 2011 will jump to 44% in 2030. How do these numbers effect government and the political arena? ABC World News: Weight Loss Surgery May Cure Diabetes, Immediately!

There may be a cure for obesity and diabetesMar 26, 2012 – ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer reported that two studies released by the New England Journal of Medicine show that bariatric surgery may cure type 2 diabetes. The study reported that patients that undergo weight loss surgery can be off insulin sometimes as soon as 72 hours after the operation. Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News Chief Health Medical Editor says that this is good news for patients who worry about the possible consequences of long-term type 2 diabetes such as blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. That seems to be inline with a previous report by ABC’s Good Morning America in April 2011 when the International Diabetes Federation recommended for the first time bariatric surgery as a treatment for diabetes for obese patients.
