Dr. Amen: Brain Healthy Habits That Will Add Years To Your Life.

As an award-winning psychiatrist, best-selling author and brain imaging expert, Dr. Daniel Amen imparts the benefit of his years of experience in his PBS Special Use Your Brain to Change Your Age airing on Public Broadcasting Stations. He says “Now is the time to be a warrior for the health of your brain. Your brain does not have to deteriorate. With a little forethought, you can slow and even reverse the aging process in the brain and dramatically improve everything in your life.” He says we can even add years to our life by Engaging in Regular Brain Healthy Habits.

  • Use food as medicine. Instead of taking medications to control high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low vitamin D levels and C-reactive protein (CRP – measure of inflammation), eat nutrient dense foods. He shared a case study of a patient, where all of these lab values where high. His treatment was for her to eat like a “gorilla”, eating lots of vegetables, some fruit, nuts and seeds and some protein. She was to eliminate sugar, bread, pasta, grains, dairy, soy, coffee and alcohol which was pretty much everything in her kitchen! But after only five weeks, she had lost 30 pounds and all of the previously mentioned medical lab values which were high were now normal, without using any medications. The take away here is only put whole, high-quality food into your body and not too much of it!  A 20 year Calorie Restriction Study showed that monkeys not only lived longer but also positive results showed up in their brain, hair and skin. Too many calories cause waste to build up in your cells causing everything to look and feel older. Dr Amen suggests Foods That Help Both Brain and Skin:
    1. Omega 3 rich seafood, nuts, and avocados
    2. Green tea
    3. Berries
    4. Green leafy vegetables
  • High quality smart supplements will help keep your brain and skin young.  Dr. Amen makes these suggestions for targeted supplements:
    1. Take a Multiple Vitamin daily.  B vitamins have been shown to help memory.
    2. Take a quality Fish Oil daily which decreases inflammation.
    3. Measure and optimize your Vitamin D level. You should know your Vitamin D level like you know your cholesterol levels.
    4. Take a combination of brains smart nutrients like Ginko, vinpocetine, huperzine A, and acetyl-l-carnitine together with this brain healthy program. They tend not to work as well taken by themselves
  • Exercise is an important habit that you should make part of your life. It pumps up your brain and makes you smarter! You don’t have to go crazy with exercise. Dr. Amen suggests that you walk like you are late 45 minutes, 4 times a week. The faster you can walk as you age the less likely you are to die early. Lift weights 30 minutes, twice a week. The stronger you are as you age, the less likely you are to get Alzheimer’s disease. Weightlifting also increases your metabolism and hormone levels such as testosterone and your growth hormone. One of Dr. Amen’s patients after committing himself to regular exercise,  increased the function of a part of his brain from 4% to 45%!
  • Lifelong learning is important in keeping your brain young. Whenever you learn something new, your brain makes a new connection. But when you stop learning your brain starts to disconnect itself. But this does not mean just doing crossword puzzles. You have to use your whole brain. Doing only crossword puzzles is like going to the gym and only doing bicep curls on your right arm and then going home.  Try meditation. Meditation boosts the judgment part of your brain. Playing word games enhances your language centers. Memory games works the brain hippocampus and learning a new dance step can activate your coordination centers. To work your brain, spend 15 minutes a day learning something new.
