Dr. Daniel Amen:You Can Reverse The Aging Process In Your Brain

“Your brain does not have to deteriorate.  With a little forethought, you can slow and even reverse the aging process in the brain and dramatically improve everything in your life.”  That is what Dr. Daniel Amen claims in his PBS Special Use Your Brain To Change Your Age seen on Public Broadcasting Stations. He approaches aging and declining health by focusing on the brain.  As an award-winning psychiatrist, best-selling author and brain imaging expert, Dr. Amen sets out to give us “Seven Very Simple Steps to boost our brain, to live longer, look younger and dramatically decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s”. 

Over the last 20 years Dr. Amen has performed more than 70,000 brain scans on patients from 90 different countries. They have developed a brain scan program called SPECT which stands for Single, Photon, Emission, Computed, Tomography.  It looks at how the brain works, blood flow and activity patterns.  Throughout the program he shows us brain scans of healthy people versus unhealthy brains.  These scans clearly show damage and deterioration.

He also shows follow up scans of the brains of patients over 50 years old and some even up into their 80’s, that have dramatically improved and reversed their brain damage and overall health.  Dr. Amen claims that many of his older patients after going through his program, had brain scans improvements that far exceeded a person of a much younger age.  It was as if they aged backwards!

Dr. Amen states a sobering statistic that 50% of people 85 years old will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  And Alzheimer’s is expected to triple in the coming decades.  There is no cure for it on the horizon. What can we do now?

He says by doing the steps in his program, research has shown that more than half of the cases of Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of dementia can be prevented.

So what is dementia? What is the difference between dementia(mental deterioration) and Alzheimer’s?  Dr. Amen explains that dementia is the big umbrella categoryThe following are causes of dementia:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Brain trauma
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Vascular dementia (of the blood vessels)
  • Parkinson’s
  • Other causes

Now that we know what our brains may be facing, what do we do to prevent and/or reverse our current situation to move forward to a brain healthy future?
