Dr Oz: Fruits And Vegetables To Consider Buying Organic

Consider Buying Peaches OrganicDr. Oz, in his continued effort to give us the best information for our best health, a variety of his shows have addressed his picks of top “dirty” fruits and vegetables. He considers them “dirty” because they are susceptible to being contaminated with large quantities of pesticides. Sometimes organic fruits and vegetables are not always affordable or available.  But just being aware of our best choices may help you tune into your “health radar” and scan your regular grocery digs for affordable choices when organic foods may be in season and on sale!

1.  Strawberries are mostly imported from countries that have less stringent regulations for pesticide use. As many as 59 pesticides have been detected in the residue on certain strawberries. The strawberry’s external seeds make them difficult to properly clean. Look for locally grown strawberries in season and/or strawberries that say “Product of USA”.  Soak strawberries for about 2 minutes in water before rinsing to help loosen the dirt and chemicals.

2.  Apples can be sprayed with poisons to kill fungi and  insects. More than 40 different pesticides have been found in the residue on apples. Food wax can also be applied to make them shiny and perserve the apple for shipping long distances. Smell apples when purchasing for a fresh apple smell. If they don’t smell fresh or if they are too shiny, avoid!!

3.   Spinach. More than 45 different pesticides have been found laced in spinach to protect the spinach crop against a variety of pests including the leaf miner beetle, who lays eggs on the underside of the spinach leaf. Additionally, ground vegetables tend to have more exposure to pesticides. A safer and more affordable option may be choosing frozen spinach. It is washed and blanched as part of the freezing process and can remove as much as 90% of the pesticide residue.

4.  Peaches. Because of their delicate skins, peaches tend to absorb a large amount of pesticides.  More than 60 pesticides have been detected in peaches.  Dr. Oz advises that a quick rinse may not be enough. Dr. Oz has offered a recipe for a homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash.

These are Dr. Oz’s top four choices of “Dirty Fruits and Vegetables”  but to help you make a wider variety of choices Dr. Oz gives us additional guidelines to keep in mind on your next grocery visit!  Put this list in your bag or on your cell phone.
