Dr Oz: Know Your Blood Sugar Level to Know When You Are At Risk For Diabetes

Testing your blood sugarDr. Oz from The Dr. Oz Show has voiced his concern repeatedly over the obesity and diabetes crisis we are facing here in America. In his concern he has given us guidelines as tools we can use to improve and monitor our health. Some of those tools are knowing and monitoring your healthy numbers. One important number we need to know is our fasting blood sugar level. That number will let us know when we may be at risk for diabetes.  So how do we get a daily blood sugar level reading without going to a doctor daily?

Your local pharmacy has the answer.  You are able to pick up the supplies you need to test your blood sugar at your local pharmacy without a prescription.  However your insurance may cover the cost with a doctor’s prescription.  Your doctor may instruct you to take regular readings, whether fasting in the morning when you wakeup and/or random readings through out the day.  You will need the following:

  • A portable device called a Glucometer. They may cost anywhere from $9.99 for a store brand model to upwards of $75.00 for models with features needed for more serious medical conditions.
  • Lancets, which are small needles needed to get a tiny blood sample.  According to the brand of glucometer that you choose, lancets may cost for 100 needles $6.99 to about $15.00.  You will prick your finger with the lancet and place that tiny drop of blood on a test strip…
  • Test trips use chemical technologies to determine the amount of glucose in your blood. Some consider them the biggest expense, costing for 100 lancets, anywhere from $49.99 to more than $125.00 according to the glucometer you chose.
  • A Log Book to record your numbers. Some Glucometer Kits come with a log book, but you can organize your numbers on anything from a $1.00 notepad to an Excel Spreadsheet.

The investment of the testing supplies may seem costly but monitoring you blood sugar especially for those who struggle with overweight and obesity will help you know where you stand while you work on improving your health.  Overweight and obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes and other associated health problems.  Knowing your blood sugar levels will alert you when you are in medical danger or when your weight loss program is making positive progress.

Take and record your fasting blood sugar reading went you wake up in the morning. Dr. Oz says your fasting blood sugar number should be under 100 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter).  The American Diabetes Association give these levels:

  • Normal – 100 md/dL or less
  • Pre-Diabetes  – more than 100 mg/dL to 126 mg/dL
  • Diabetic  – 126 mg/dL or more

Be sure to share your blood level recordings with your medical professional.
