Dr. Youn: The Age Fix – Why Botox Works and Facial Exercises DO NOT!

Facial Wrinkles and RetinolIn the PBS special The Age Fix,  Dr. Anthony Youn shares his expert advice on how Botox works and why facial exercises do not!
He explains that the more often you make a certain facial movement that creases your skin, the more likely that crease will settle in and create a permanent wrinkle!  So Dr. Youn says our Mothers were right! If you keep making that face it’s gonna’ stay that way!

Does that mean if we don’t move our face and create wrinkles are face will be smoother? Actually yes, says Dr. Youn! That is why Botox works to smooth wrinkles!
He explains that our skin contains collagen which keeps our skin tight. But as we age the collagen becomes weakened. This weakness in collagen is what causes our faces to sag. Also this collagen weakness combined with repetitive facial movements causes wrinkles and creases in our faces. So facial exercises which are repetitive facial movements may actually cause more wrinkles!

When Botox is injected, it temporarily weakens the muscles that create those wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines and crows feet. When those weakened muscles stop contracting those areas become relaxed, they smooth out and the wrinkles disappear.

What if you don’t want to undergo Botox injections at the doctor’s office?

 Dr. Youn said try this Home Remedy:
You can actually get a similar result by using scotch tape. The idea is to train our facial muscles not to contract so much.

What you do is put scotch tape on your forehead at night before bed. And while you are sleeping you will feel the tape and it will keep you from contracting your forehead muscles essentially training you not to contract those muscles!
Dr. Youn says he knows several celebrities that use this trick.
