For today’s busy families, keeping a bag of frozen bananas in the freezer is a great habit to get into, especially when you are concerned with keeping a healthy eating environment and avoiding childhood obesity. Frozen bananas maintain their natural sweetness and can be used in smoothies, and baked goods and even on a stick for quick and healthy snacks and desserts. For families on a budget, you can buy bananas when they’re on sale in bulk and by freezing them you don’t have to worry about them going bad.  So what’s the best way to freeze them?

Frozen BananasFor optimal sweetness, the banana should be frozen when it is at its ripest, when the skin has brown spots, but the flesh is still firm and not bruised.  Remove the skin, cut into thirds, and place on a tray. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze completely.  To avoid freezer burn, store the frozen banana pieces in a zip lock freezer bag.  You can then use them frozen or thawed as called for in recipes.
