GMA: Best Weight Loss Diet Rankings From U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report Best DietsJun 7, 2011 – Good Morning America together with Robin Roberts and Lara Spencer, reported on the “Best Diets” rankings put out by U.S. News & World Report.  The U.S. News & World Report are well known for their “Best Hospitals” and “Best Colleges” rankings.  In this list of “Bests”,  20 diets including popular ones like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and even The Mediterranean are ranked in 5 different categories, one of which is “Best Diets For Weight Loss”.

The U.S. News Team wanted to get down to the truth of all the claims and hype from the many diets we are constantly bombarded with. They spend 6 months researching medical journals, government reports and other sources.  They assigned a panel of 22 known experts and specialists in diet and nutrition, diabetes and health disease. After the panel carefully scrutinized each diet, taking in consideration nutritional value, proven results, and ease, they ranked their results according to their best scores in the Following 5 categories:

Best Diets Overall – Top 5 – To be top-rated, a diet had to be relatively easy to follow, nutritious, safe, and effective for weight loss since as little as 5 percent of body weight loss and keeping it off can dramatically reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Three diets came in for the #2 spot.

Best Diets For Weight Loss – Top 5 – Combines short-term and long-term weight-loss average ratings, weighting each equally. There are two diets in the #2 spot.

Best Commercial Diet Plans – Top 5 – Brand-name diet program experts considered each diet’s ability to deliver weight loss, provide good nutrition and safety, and be relatively easy to follow.

Best Diabetes Diets – Top 5 – Experts considered how good each diet is for both prevention and treatment of diabetes. There are three in the #2 spot.

Best Heart Healthy Diets – Top 5 – Experts considered heart-healthy diets which helped lose weight,  lowered cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides.
