GMA: Coconut Water vs Gatorade. Which is The Best Sports Drink? Coconut Water Beats Gatorade!

Coconut WaterGood Morning America’s Special Correspondent, Melissa Rycroft, reported on the Coconut Water Craze, a trendy drinking habit that has grown into a multi-million-dollar industry. Where it once was a tropical paradise island drink, it seems coconut water is now a world wide ‘must have ‘ among celebrities and the trendy fitness crowd.  Coconut water is the clear liquid inside young coconuts. It has been touted as ‘a natural alternative to sports drinks’. So GMA’s Melissa Rycroft set out to answer the question “Is the health benefits worth the hype?”

That’s a fair enough question since Melissa reported that there are more than 12 brands of coconut water sold in the US grossing about $350 million in annual sales! Yeah! What’s the hype!

Melissa found out that coconut water is popular with the health nuts. Trendy health nuts!  She reported that health conscious yoga studios from New York to LA are getting in on the action. LA’s Bikram Yoga Studio Downtown has been selling coconut water for five years.  They said 17 cases will probably be gone in about three days!  Bikram Yoga is practiced in 105° heat so the hydration properties of coconut water is important to them.

Marjorie Nolan from the American Dietetic Association said to GMA that coconut water naturally has electrolytes; sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which helps replenish the body and fulfill hydration.

Since Melissa said “some call it ‘Nature’s Gatorade’ ” ANewDayANewMe.com used an online nutrient calculator, TheRightTrak.com, to compare the nutrient values of Gatorade vs coconut water. The RightTrak uses USDA Food Database nutrient data.  We did a Food Search for ” gatorade ” and chose the “Gatorade, Sports Drink, Fruit-Flaved, R-t-d (244g/8oz)” option. R-t-d means Ready to Drink, not a powder.

Then we did a Food Search for ” coconut water ” and chose the “Coconut water (Liq From Coconuts) (240g/1 cup)” option.

With both products lined up for comparison, we found that coconut water came out over the top compared to Gatorade for nutrient value! Coconut water excelled over Gatorade in amounts of fiber, riboflavin, choline, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc.

We took it another step further and checked out the Vita Coco Nutrient Fact Sheet.  Vita Coco is one the most popular brands.  With some minor discrepancies questions, they were spot on with most of the major FDA data.

While Melissa did note that maybe we should check the label for calories vs serving sizes and to look for those brands that mix fruit juice with their coconut water…coconut water did have less calories than Gatorade.

In the light of the arsenic issue about apple juice concentrate in America containing unhealthy levels of arsenic, should we be considering coconut water as an alternative?

Well, one fan of the coconut water who spoke to Melissa drinks up to a liter a day.  She says it’s refreshing and not to sweet. She thinks it helps with her hangovers after a night of drinking.  And also thinks it’s good for her skin and indigestion.

  1. Great information, fantastic view and facts. I agree I think coconut water is amazing, love its taste. Im from the uk and my favourite is Cocofina, from http://www.cocofina.com. It has a strong nutty flavour unlike some other ones that I have tryed. Thanks again for the information.
