Botox Mom: Is It Legal to Give Botox To Children For Wrinkles?

Mother Gives Child BotoxMay 13, 2011 – This week airing on Good Morning America, ABC’s Lara Spencer had an exclusive interview with a mother who was herself injecting her 8 year old daughter with Botox to remove wrinkles in an effort to keep up with the Child Pageant Circuit. Immediately Dr. Oz came to mind because also this week he had a segment on his show about the dangers of receiving fake Botox, recieving the wrong types of Botox and being injected by non-professionals. Besides being horrified for the little girl, is it even legal?

According to Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News Chief Health Medical Editor, it is legal for a doctor to administer Botox to children and can actually help with neuromuscular disorders, but Dr. Besser says that giving Botox to a child for wrinkles borders on malpractice.

During Lara Spencer’s interview with the mother, Kerry Campbell, it was said that she is 34 years old, a parttime aesthetician which by definition are licensed skincare specialists. She said she uses Botox and feels it is safe for her to inject her daughter. She would not say where she gets the Botox, but says it is from a trusted source.

Should you give Botox to a Child?Lara spoke to 8 year Britney who said it hurts but you get used to it. But regarding the waxing of her legs! she said it was super, super hard to deal with and doesn’t want to do that again!

Her mother said she got the idea of the Botox injections from other mothers on the Child Pageant Circuit.  She said Britney did voice concern about wrinkles and because in the pageant world the kids can be very harsh she felt these treatments add to Britney’s confidence when she is in the pageant environment.

Lara Spencer spoke to Dr. Charles Sophy, Psychiatrist and Medical Director, LA County DCFS (Department of Child and family services) and he commented ” There’s a lot of psychological damage that can be caused and that’s where the psychological intervention needs to happen to be able to make sure that there are blurred boundaries here and projections going on that are going to have a longer psychological ramifications for this child.”…Whatever!

I think Lara said it best… “there’s a lot of lost innocence in many people’s eyes, when a little girl is worried about the way she looks instead of if it’s sunny enough to play outside….It’s a slippery slope!”
