Kathie Lee and Hoda: Natural Ways to Suppress Your Appetite

Baked PotatoLooking for a little help to fight the cravings and keep your appetite down?

“Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda” along with their guest Keri Glassman, registered dietitian and a Women’s Health contributor, gave us some unusual and natural tips on ways to keep our hunger pains in check while we are trying to lose those stubborn pounds.

Potatoes! Keri says potatoes contain a type of fiber called ‘resistant starch’.  Just like other types of fiber it helps keep you full and helps control blood sugar.  But what’s special about this ‘resistant starch’ is that it has been shown to burn fat!  Keri said the catch to increasing the effectiveness of resistant starch is that you have to eat it cold.   So consider a healthy cold potato salad, of course watching the portion size. (Keep in mind that certain preparations of potatoes like potato chips contain chemicals that may cause cancer.)

Protein. She reminds us, to make sure we have breakfast because it gets our metabolism going. But the trick is to have a good protein source at breakfast. As she put it, protein provides “Satiety” meaning satisfied, and it tends to keep us more satisfied and for a longer time than other nutrients. She suggests two eggs with breakfast can give you up to 15g of additional protein.

Grapefruit. Keri said that one study showed dieters that ate a half a grapefruit before every meal for 12 weeks lost 3.6 pounds, some as much as 10 pounds, eating the same things they usually do!  Keri added the study also showed that post meal insulin levels were decreased, possibly decreasing fat storage.  We also know that grapefruits are full of fiber, are a good source of vitamin C, are low in calories and are also full of water volume.  So eating foods like that before a meal can cut the overall calories that you eat at a meal.

Peppermint. Now this something different. Keri said a study showed that if you smelled peppermint every two hours, you can decrease the number of calories that you eat, about 2700 calories a week! That is about 2/3 of the pound! Just the smell of certain foods can actually make you eat less calories.  The study shows that green apples and vanilla and bananas do the same thing. That’s worth a try!

Snacking.  Keri reminded us that when we eat consistently throughout the day, we keep our metabolism up and snacking helps cut hunger.  But she advised, of course, to snack on healthy food that has a combination of protein, healthy fat, and fiber such as almonds, cashews, edamame (green soy beans), bread with peanut butter, popcorn and pistachios. Of course, aways be aware of portion size and calorie count.

Great tips and very doable!
