Mediterranean Diet Is Better Than We Thought!

Nuts and SeedsWe have heard time and time again how healthy the popular Mediterranean Diet is for us. The diet is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans/legumes, healthy oils such as from olives, nuts, and avocados and healthy animal sources like fish and chicken. And even wine!  But a new study shows that the diet is even more healthy than we thought!

ABC’s David Muir on ABC World News reports that the researchers of a new study found results that were so astounding that they halted the study, jumped on the diet and published results before the study was finished! The study looked at people with very high risk of heart disease and it showed that the Mediterranean Diet reduced that heart disease risk by 30%!

ABC’s Chief Health Medical Editor, Dr. Richard Besser explained that stopping a study before it’s done is unusual but finding a reduction of 30% in heart disease risk is also very unusual. He said taking statins for heart disease only reduces your risk by 25%.

Dr. Besser said we should strive to consume as an example 4 tablespoons of olive oil a day or 30 grams (a little more than an ounce) of nuts daily. (Typically, try to incorporate a comparable combination of these healthy oils daily to include a variety of nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and olive oils, fish and fish oils and the like)

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams said the report published in the “New England Journal” showed that over a five year study, people that followed The Mediterranean Diet were again 30% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those on a general Low Fat Diet. Their report seems to indicate that the key is replacing bad fat calories with good fat calories.

These findings seem to be in line with the Flat Belly Diet featured on the Dr. Oz Show which stated that eating healthy fat was the key to losing belly fat!
