New Study: Direct Link Between Facial Wrinkles and Osteoporosis

Facial Wrinkles and OsteoporosisJim Avila reported for ABC World News this week on some new findings regarding osteoporosis, the bone thinning disease that women need to guard themselves from developing in later years.  A study sponsored by Yale involving post menopausal women contends that it is possible for a doctor to know the condition of your bones by just looking at the wrinkles on your face!

There seems to be a direct link between aging skin and aging skeleton.  According to Jim Avila’s report, this discovery could possibly eliminate the need for expensive across the board bone density testing which can cost $350.00 a patient.

Dr. Ruth Freeman, Principal Investigator at Yale Medical School, explained that the skin and the skeleton have the same collagen.  So when the collagen breaks down and you lose bone density, collagen in the skin of which we can openly see, also breaks down causing visible wrinkles and other changes in the skin thickness.

On a scale of 1 to 6, the health study says the deeper the wrinkles, the bigger the chance of low bone density and bone disease.  Only natural wrinkles are measured, not those altered by overtanning, Botox and cosmetic procedures.  Without costly bone density tests, post menopausal women between the ages of 45 and 58 with heavy wrinkles would be identified by their doctors as high risk and would then be able to benefit from vital early treatment.
