Oprah: Does Having Children Make You Happier?

Should we have children?Oprah Winfrey asked her studio audience this question on the recent show she had on the subject of Happiness and what makes us Happier.  Seems that there are a few factors that may effect the happiness quotient with this question.  Oprah’s guests, popular actress Goldie Hawn and founder of the Hawn Foundation and mother herself, and Dan Buettner, researcher and best-selling author, share insights and findings that may help you decide if this should be your route to happiness.

Goldie Hawn suggested that the happiness factor with having children comes in stages.  For instance when you’re first starting out it’s very hard because you may be sleep deprived as well as other problems associated with new families. But as children grew older you enjoy the experience more. She said at her present stage, she couldn’t imagine her life without her family. Goldie advised not to be afraid of having children because it is a blissful experience.  Just consider that there are stages of happiness with it.

Dan Buettner has a spent years researching happiness. He has even identified Blue Zones that are areas where people live the longest around the world. In association with National Geographic, he has just released Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way.

Dan says what affects the happiness quotient with having children is that we fail to predict and foresee factors such as the toll of all the sleep we are going to miss, that it costs over a quarter of $1 million to raise a child to age 18 nowadays, and the missed sex.

Dan says that having children is harder on women than it is on men.  Especially if you are a working woman.  Studies in Germany show that having a child for women is like taking on a second job.

The important thing is having children isn’t bad.  It probably brings net happiness, but if you’re looking for an antidote for a tough relationship that isn’t working, having children is not the answer! Oprah clarified that having children, if the relationship is already bad doesn’t make it good.  Which Dan agreed, it would make it worse!

But the good news is that when the kids turn 18, your happiness level goes back to normal and keeps going up from there!  And that grandparents are very happy people.
