Oprah: Dr. Oz’s Health Checklist. What shape should your poop be? and more..

ToiletNBC is airing reruns of the Oprah Shows called Best Of Oprah which is giving us a chance to revisit some of our favorite Oprah moments, guests and celebrities.  One of our favorites were the weekly visits from Dr. Oz before he launched his own show.  Some of his best medical advise to us came from these shows.  In this segment, in the form of an audience participation quiz, Dr. Oz answered a miscellaneous list of medical questions that will be helpful to know for all of us; from What shape should healthy poop be? to How many times should you have sex to live longer?

So…What shape should your poop be, a pancake, a pebble or S-shaped? Dr. Oz says it should be S-shaped. Poop, stool or bowel movement whichever you prefer, before it comes out, is stored in the bottom of your rectum and that is where it achieves that shape. If it is not that shape, it may not have been stored in the right place and your waste may not be working well.

How much fiber should you eat every day, 10, 15, 25, 55 grams? Dr. Oz says people should eat at least 25 grams of fiber per day. If not, you will have difficulty achieving that S-shaped poop!  And many Americans do have difficulty with their bowel movements because Dr. Oz says on average Americans only get 10 grams of fiber per day!  The best way of getting fiber is throughout your day eating fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and other legumes and whole grains as part of your meals.  Dr. Oz says eating enough fiber also brings down your blood pressure, brings down your bad cholesterol (LDL), and helps control and prevent diabetes.  How do you know if the foods you eat contain all the fiber you and your loved ones need?

You may want to use a free online nutrient calculator such as The RightTrak.com. The RightTrak.com will calculate your Recommended Daily Allowances(RDA) for Fiber and over 30 other nutrients while it is calculating your BMI. You can select a variety of foods and The RightTrak will add up the nutrient values of your selected foods such as Fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, folate, beta carotene…and more. Dr. Oz says make sure when you increase your fiber intake,  you also increase your water intake to keep things softened and moving through your system.

When have you had enough water? When you feel bloated, when your urine is clear enough to read through or when you have to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes? Dr. Oz says when your urine is clear enough to read through! Dr. Oz says you don’t always need to count glasses of water. Your body will tell you how much it needs if you pay attention to it! The purpose of urine is to get rid of waste, like nitrogen. When it is dark, it’s concentrated with waste.  When it is clear, the waste is washed out!

What is the most dangerous fat on your body?  Your thighs, your buttocks, or your belly? Dr. Oz says it is Belly Fat! Read why it is dangerous and why it might effect a man’s penis size!

What number let’s us know how well we are aging? Blood Pressure, Cholesterol or Weight ?  Dr. Oz says it is Blood Pressure and high blood pressure will strip 10 years off your age! High blood pressure damages your artery walls. To keep your blood pressure under a healthy 120/80, Dr. Oz says most important is getting enough exercise. Also avoid excess salt and processed foods and have an adequate amount of potassium. How do we know we are getting enough potassium from the foods we eat? Use a nutrient calculator like The RightTrak.com .

Impotence can be a sign of what health problem? Liver Problem, Heart Disease or Iron Deficiency? Dr. Oz says Heart Disease. Our bodies release a gas called nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels dilate so blood can flow through as in an erection. If you can’t get an erection you may not be releasing enough nitric oxide. If the nitric oxide is not present “down there” it won’t be present in other parts of your body either, like your heart. Dr. Oz said that the penis is the “dipstick” for men’s health and impotence is one of the first signs of hardened arteries.

Dr. Oz explained that drugs that treat erectile dysfunction are designed to stimulate the release of nitric oxide.  The drugs may help the erection problem, but does not take care of the more serious health issues that may be root of the problem. The best solution is to keep our arteries healthy which will keep our nitric oxide levels healthy.  Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, stop smoking, maintaining a healthy weight are steps to reversing heart disease.  President Bill Clinton turned to a vegan diet to improve his heart disease.  Read more….

How often should you have sex in order to live longer?  Dr. Oz says 200 times a year! He said even though the average number of times a person has sex is 58 times a year, a survey done by Duke University regarding the amount and quality of intercourse people were having correlates with a reduction of your physiologic age by six years if you have more than 200 orgasms a year! Dr. Oz feels that having sex with someone you love may be a spiritual experience for folks and a way of achieving that Zen feeling that we all crave as human beings.  And having that experience so many times a year seems to offer some survival benefit!
