Oprah: Nutrition Pillar of Bob Greene’s 20 Years Younger Plan

Brussel Sprouts are SuperfoodsThe Oprah Winfrey Show aired a program featuring Best Life Coach Bob Greene’s nutrition plan 20 Years Younger. Bob says you can look and feel 20 years younger by revamping four areas of your life: exercise, nutrition, skin care, and sleep. 20 of Oprah’s viewers chosen from thousands of e-mails participated in a 60 day challenge to see if the 20 Years Younger plan could improve their life. They committed to following the plan faithfully. Bob and Dream Team nutritionist Janis Jibrin taught the women the nutrition portion of the challenge.

The Nutrition Pillar:

  • Bob puts the challengers on a 1700 calorie a day plan. The diet was designed primarily to address the elements to add what will improve your aging process and the elements to take out of the diet that excelerate aging (such as sugars and white flour).
  • Bob says each meal must include super foods with anti-aging qualities such as sweet potatoes, eggplants, and blueberries.  Half your plate should be covered with fruit and vegetables.
  • Bob said certain foods like brussels sprouts and seaweed will taste good if they are prepared the right way.  Sometimes just sautéing in olive oil which is another superfood can make all the difference.
  • Replace fattening starches like white flours with whole grains, brown rice, and lentils.
  • Choose good high protein sources like fish, chicken, or soy (tofu).
  • Spices like ginger and basil contain antioxidants that help fight infection and chronic diseases. Janis Jibrin gives an example of putting 2 tbsp basil and ¼ cup parsley in your salad.
  • His advice is take a multivitamin, a calcium, and at least one omega-3 fatty acid supplement every day of your life.
  • Bob stresses that this is not a diet. This is a way of life.
