Racheal Ray: Dr. Youn Discusses Better Facial Procedure Options

Dr. Houn Gives Cosmetic Surgery AdviceDr. Youn MD and Board Certified Plastic Surgeon appeared on Rachael Ray and talked about cosmetic procedures that sometimes work, sometimes don’t and sometimes are just plain dangerous.

Silicon vs JUVÉDERM

Dr. Youn says how he keeps hearing on the news about people being injected by non-doctors with industrial strength silicone used for caulking in kitchen and bath plumbing! These procedures are being done in unlikely places such as hotel rooms and even restaurants!

The doctor explained that this type of silicon is not the same silicon used in breast implants. If you inject industrial strength silicone into your lips or face or breasts, you can not remove it except by cutting it out. It can create hard lumps that are permanent.

He said JUVÉDERM, a hyaluronic acid, is typically used in his practice as a facial filler to smooth ‘coma lines’ or ‘laugh lines’ around the mouth. It’s FDA Approved for that treament and lasts about 6-12 months. And treatment is completely irreversible. If you don’t like the results there is a substance that can be injected that immediately dissolves the JUVÉDERM.

Thread Lift vs Mini Face Lift

Dr. Youn says every couple years there’s a fad face lift that promises big results with minimal surgery.  He discusses one that is called the “thread lift”.  He showed the device used for theThread Lift Device procedure. It was a large needle threaded with a strand of a barbed suture. Barbed as in barbed wire. It’s designed to engage the skin.

He showed how the suture is injected under the skin typically at the temple area in multiple places in the face and exiting the stitch out of the cheek.  The sutures are grabbed up at the temples and with the help of the barbs in the sutures under the skin, the face is lifted up. He said it could possibly take only 10 minutes.

The negative side is that the results may only last a year and if the doctor uses a permanent suture, you may have a stitch or tracks left in your face that needs to be corrected.  He advised that the procedure is still being done, so if you are considering a “thread lift”, be very cautious and do your homework.

He suggested the “mini face lift” as an alternatve. It utilizes small incisions to fix small problem areas like removing the jowls for a sharper jawline.  Since it is real surgery, make sure you use a board certified plastic surgeon.  It’s about a two to three hour surgery, one to two week recovery time.  Dr. Youn said “there is no substitute for a good facelift by a board certified surgeon.”  Results of a mini facelift can last about ten years, but it is really determined by age and skin quality.

Cheek Implants vs Fat Grafting

Dr. Youn explained that when we age our face deflates and sags. We treat the sagging by lifting. But our faces also gets thinner as it deflates. Some doctors are using cheek implants to plumb up the face. Though some doctors seem to have success with them, Dr. Youn feels it makes the cheeks look hard.

He likes to soften the sometimes chiseled aging face with “fat grafting”. He considers it his favorite procedure because it’s a “green” surgery. We are recycling our own fat!  We can take fat off our bottoms, thighs or tummies,  purify it and inject it into our face or lips or where we need it.  He says the surgery only takes about an hour with no visible scars and you look a little puffy for about two weeks. The fat seems to last 5 to 10 years!

Sounds like a win, win situation to me!
