The View: Dr. Oz on Arsenic, Vaccines, Obesity and Soy Milk

9-20-2012 Dr. Mehmet Oz visited with the ladies on The View giving them his advise on the current issue concerning arsenic levels in our children’s rice products.  He was previously in the media with a lot to say when he took on the FDA about his concern about the arsenic levels in our children’s apple juice!  Now the ladies of The View wants to know what we should do about rice as well as his take on vaccines for hooping cough, the rising obesity rates and does soy milk really make boobs grow on little boys!

Arsenic

Dr. Oz says everyone agrees that there is arsenic in rice.  But the new Consumer Reports  say the levels in rice are “worrisome.”  Dr. Oz says the goal is to have the least amount in the food supply.  But how far do you want to go?  The arsenic is in the food supply because since 1910 we have been using it as a pesticide and even today it’s in animal feed.  Even though we don’t use it as a pesticide it’s now in our soil.  We do know that chronic exposure to arsenic causes cancer, it causes lung problems, and developmental delays in children.  Our kids may have lower IQs, they are not dreaming right, they’re having anxiety issues and cannot sleep.  These are all the things that have been reported with arsenic exposure. Dr. Oz said that the United Kingdom, they have thought this through and said “we don’t want our kids under the age of five to have rice drinks.”  You can use other types of milk like hemp milk, almond milk, and dairy.   We should be thinking of other options for kids.  The best thing is to use a variety of grains.  Not only just to avoid arsenic, but mixing up grains such as millet, barley, amaranth and quinoa balances the nutrients.  One grain may have a lot of one nutrient but a little of something else that another grain may have a lot of.  These grains also have a lot less amounts of arsenic than rice.  Our bodies do a fine job of removing toxins like arsenic as long as you don’t over expose the body to overwhelming amounts.

If you want to eat rice, Dr. Oz suggests we cook the rice the way they make it in the Far East.  Rinse the rice with lots of water until water is clear.  Then boil it in a lot of water and then drain the water off like you do when you make pasta. “Pasta Style.”  This way you reduce the arsenic levels about 30%.  About brown rice, Dr. Oz says brown rice is still healthier than white rice.  The problem is the arsenic is stuck in the hull, the outside part of the grain, and that is where the nutrients are also.  What about rice from other countries like arborio rice from Italy?  Dr. Oz says all the rice looked at in the report had some arsenic, but some countries have less arsenic than the USA.

Is Soy Milk good for kids?  Does it grow breast on boys?

Dr. Oz says that growing breasts on boys is not the issue with soy milk. What we should know about soy milk and young kids is that soy milk contains phytoestrogens, plant estrogens,  which may turn on the parts of your body that respond to estrogen.  So we should not be giving huge doses of those things to kids.

Obesity. What is causing the rate to rise to at least 44% in 2030?

Dr. Oz says that the new obesity rates are petrifyingly high.  It is a perfect storm for weight gain.  We have an environment that makes it very hard to do the right thing physically.  We eat the wrong things because the wrong things are readily available.  He mentioned that he had The First Lady on his show last week and told her that he thinks obesity is a “national security crisis.”  Obesity is making the economy unsustainable.

He says we are getting fatter because we have created an environment where it’s easy to get calories but not nutrients.  The brain is really smart and is looking for nutrients.  So if somebody is eating junk food the brain says “That’s great!  You have the calories for your hips but I’m not getting what I want so keep eating so I can get my nutrients.”  So you keep eating and eating.  The bases of our diets are carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates containing empty calories is the cause of weight gain.

Dr. Oz says he feels confident we are making a dent in weight gain.  He can tell by the notes he is receiving.  But what he is trying to do is give us tools.  Simple things that we know works like green coffee bean extract, herbs that might work, changes in your diet that may work,  little nudges to the biology of blubber.  We have got to get America to realize that our best years is not behind us but they are in front of us.  We have the power to get out of our rut and show up in our own life!

Vaccines. Is it dangerous for parents to resist having their kids vaccinated?

Dr. Oz says there is now an outbreak of whooping cough.  He said his father who is now 86 years old,  lost half of his siblings due to deaths by whooping cough.  He respects giving people autonomy and the right to choose if they want to be vaccinated or not, but please have the honest discussion.  These are not simple decisions.  He believes that if you have those conversations, the vast majority of people will decide to have the vaccine.  He has had the same struggle in his own family, but ultimately everyone did get vaccinated.  The problem is when you order people to do things they go underground.  If you can keep things public, people tend to cooperate.
