Vitamin D

Dr. Oz considers Vitamin D a supplement “Superstar.” Vitamin D is critical for bone health.  Without vitamin D, our bodies cannot properly absorb calcium, and our bones become weak as osteoporosis. In addition, Dr. Oz tells us that vitamin D helps ward off diseases high blood pressure and cancer, boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation in the body.  But he tells that new research now reveals that vitamin D may play the most crucial role of all in weight loss by helping us control our appetite and revving up our metabolism! Dr. Oz says that 70% of us have low vitamin D levels which may be a link high obesity rates.

Dr. Oz’s guest, Dr. Keri Peterson, the author of a book titled The Vitamin D Diet says breakthrough research has shown that vitamin D causes fat cells to be more metabolically active which helps you burn more calories.  It also seems to aid in burning belly fat more easily. Her vitamin D diet can help you lose up to 15 pounds in five weeks.  It shifts you from a fat storing mode to a fat burning mode.  You lose the most weight in the first week. Vitamin D stimulates a hormone called leptin and leptin tells your brain “I’m full!”

What are sources of Vitamin D?
We can convert sunlight to vitamin D if we spend 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun without sunscreen.  Natural food resources would be wild salmon which includes pink canned salmon.  A rare plant source that contains vitamin D is mushrooms.  Some mushroom’s vitamin D amounts are increased by being  exposed to UV light, so you can look for “UV Exposed” on mushroom packages.  Milk in the US is typically fortified with 100 units of vitamin D per cup.

Dr. Oz has recommended on various shows daily doses ranging from 400 IU to 1000 IU.  Vitamin D is part of Dr. Oz’s “Calcium Cocktail”  to help reduce bone loss and prevent osteoporosis.
